Sensex sheds 53 points, Nifty50 below 8,400; RIL plunges 4%

The domestic equity market settled lower on Tuesday amid some selling in frontline bluechip counters on mixed global cues.  The BSE Sensex closed 52.51 points down at 27,235, while the Nifty50 index settled 14.80 points down at 8,398.

Among the specific sectors, alcoholic beverages, paints and pigments, tobacco, personal care and power stood out among the gainers, while iron and steel, glass, rubber and petroleum stocks were among the big losers.

On Tuesday, 17 stocks from the Nifty50 index advanced, while 33 ended in the red. European stock markets slid in opening trade. In initial deals, London’s FTSE 100 benchmark index of top blue-chip companies shed almost 0.3 per cent to 7,308.49 points, compared with Monday’s close.
