Closing bell: Sensex, Nifty close lower, Sun Pharma, ONGC top losers

BSE Sensex closed lower by 181.43 points to 32,760.44, while the Nifty 50 fell 68.55 points to close at 10,118.05. Here are the latest updates from the markets

The BSE Sensex and the NSE Nifty closed lower on Wednesday, weighed down by metal and telecom stocks, as trade deficit widened to an almost 3-year high. Moreover, disappointing quarterly earnings by some blue- chip companies and weak global cues made mood gloomy. The 30-share index was trading lower by 113 points, or 0.34%, at 32,828.87 in the opening session. All the sectoral indices led by metal, power and FMCG were trading in the red. The NSE Nifty fell 30.85 points, or 0.30%, to 10,155.75 in early trade.

Exports entered negative terrain after over an year, contracting 1.12% in October. Trade deficit widened to almost a 3-year high of $14 billion last month as imports surged. Metal stocks suffered the most following the decline in metal prices in the global market, traders said. Here are the latest updates from the markets:

BSE Sensex closed lower by 181.43 points, or 0.55%, to 32,760.44, while the Nifty 50 fell 68.55 points, or 0.67%, to close at 10,118.05.

BSE Sensex plunged 230.71 points, or 0.70%, to 32,711.16, while the Nifty 50 fell 78.20 points, or 0.77%, to 10,108.40.

All the sectoral indices were trading lower, with the BSE Metal index suffered most at 3.24% followed by telecom, which was down 2.55%, basic materials 2.41% and realty 2.27%.

Shares of Sun Pharma, ONGC, Bharti Airtel and ITC were the top losers with losses to the tune of 4.27%, 3.24%, 2.71% and 1.91%, respectively. Top gainers in the Sensex basket were Asian Paints, Kotak Bank and ICICI Bank with gains to the tune of 1.16%, 1.10% and 0.70%.
